2 - JOB DESCRIPTION (Final)
Currently, I work as a Technology Innovation Fellow at startup called Identity Review and have been working there since August. Identity Review is a media outlet in the digital identity space, which deals with the data economy, cybersecurity, biometrics, and more.
My job as a Tech Innovation Fellow can be broken down into two categories:
- Journalism
- Design
Journalism
Most of what I do for Identity Review is related to writing. Here are my main tasks:
- Write articles and reports
- Conduct research and outreach
- Draft tweets for Twitter
Let’s take a look at how I wrote my article that was due last Tuesday:
First, I went into the Identity Review content pipeline, which is updated weekly with assignments. This time, I had to write an article about Equifax acquiring Kount for $640M. After reading a related press release, I shot a quick email to the Kount press team with one question about the news.
While waiting for a reply, I started writing and doing more research. So, I read other news articles on the topic and learned about the companies. Luckily, Kount answered my question in a few hours, so I added the quote to my article and finished my draft.
Before submitting for editing, I made sure to link to other Identity Review articles and outside sources in my article and write two tweets to promote the article online. Then, I sent everything to my editor, who posted it online the next week. (If you’re curious, you can read my article here)!
Design
Since the fellowship program at my company is small, we can take on projects based on a special interest. I’ve been doing special projects in design. My design tasks include the following:
- Designing article headers and templates
- Creating branded infographics
- Improving the website UX
Thanks to our previous graphic designer who created Identity Review’s branding, my job is pretty easy. I never have to think about the general style or coloring of the designs and am always confident that my designs won’t clash with the company’s visual identity.
For headers, every article needs a header image. I make these in a few ways, either by overlaying graphics on edited images, creating custom icons and designs in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, or collaging together all of the above.
To make infographics, I visualize statistics and data from our research using Identity Review’s branding. I usually use Adobe Illustrator and Figma for these.
Working on UX is a pretty new task of mine. However, I hope to continue building out the website, squash any bugs in the browsing experience, and maybe even revamp the visual design of some pages to create a more attention-grabbing experience for site visitors.

Hi Serena! You did a wonderful job describing your job. Your job and the company that you work for sounds very interesting. Cybersecurity is becoming increasingly more important in this digital age, so I am sure it is a very rewarding experience working for this company.
ReplyDeleteHi Serena, your first writing assignment turned out fantastic! Cybersecurity is something that has always interested me, but I have had 0 knowledge about. I am jealous of your work despite knowing I could never do it, but I at least feel like I could talk about it myself after reading your description. Great explanation!

Hey, Serena, I enjoyed this description of your work as a Tech Innovation Fellow at Identity Review. I even clicked on the link to the article you wrote up. Impressive! Don't you wish they'd let you test out of "advanced writing for business" because that's what you're already doing? I'm glad they DON'T, however, because I can tell I will enjoy having you as a student in this class!
